Moldova places stake on nuts

On the initiative of the Moldavian Government, National Council of Activities' Coordination of the Nut Crops' promotion was created.

The Council consists of 14 people - including sitting Prime Minister of Moldova Vasiliy Tarlev, as well as Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Anatoly Gorodenko, Chairman of The Academy of Science of Moldova Georgiy Duka and other specialists.

In V. Tarlev's judgment, nuts cultivation is a rather upcoming sector for the republic. Spacing grows of walnut will be quintupled in the nearest future; specialists of the agricultural sector are already looking for the proper seed grains for the new nursery transplants. At the present time Moldova exports 10000 t of nuts every year.

One kg of walnut kernels costs 5$ on the world market.

In 2006 we have reaped a rich crop of nuts in Moldova. We are ready to offer you the best quality for the good price .

Walnuts
(genus Juglans) are plants in the walnut family Juglandaceae. They are deciduous trees, 10-40m tall, with pinnate leaves 20-90cm long, with 5-25 leaflets; the shoots have chambered pith, a character shared with the wingnuts (Pterocarya) but not the hickories (Carya) in the same family.

The 21 species in the genus range across the north temperate Old World from southeast Europe east to Japan, and more widely in the New World from southeast Canada west to California and south to Argentina. The Latin name Juglans derives from Jovis glans, "Jupiter's nuts", the nut fit for a god.

Walnuts are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including Brown-tail, Common Emerald, Emperor Moth, The Engrailed and the Coleophora case-bearers C. laticornella (recorded on J. nigra) and C. pruniella.

The word walnut derives from Old English wealhhnutu, literally "foreign nut", wealh meaning "foreign" (wealh is akin to the terms Welsh and Vlach; see *Walha and History of the term Vlach). The walnut was so called because it was introduced from Gaul and Italy. The Late Latin name for the walnut was nux Gallica, "Gallic nut".

Health & Nutrition
Q. I've heard walnuts have a lot of fat. Should I cut walnuts from my diet if I am trying to lose weight?
A. No! Walnuts contain the "good" fat that our bodies need -- polyunsaturated fat, which contain essential omega-3 fatty acids. We recommend replacing some of the fat in your current diet with walnuts. Our bodies need fat, but it is important to get the right kind of fat.
Additionally, walnuts are energy-dense foods that provide a feeling of satiety and fulfillment. When included in a calorie-controlled diet they may actually improve dieting success!
Q. What is walnut oil and how can I use it?

A.The walnut is around 70% oil. In ancient times the walnut oil was prized as a drying oil for paint, and Michaelangelo even used it to paint the Sistine Chapel in Rome! The French prize walnut oil as the very best oil for salads and cuisine!
